Working with your Recruiter

There are many ways to work with a recruiter. Sometimes people will use a recruiter in an attempt to get job offer, so they can negotiate a higher salary or promotion from their current employer. This is a very bad idea and could be harmful to your longterm career goals! The best way to work with your recruiter is in a very open, direct, and honest way. You should expect your recruiter to be the same way with you.

Much of the basic information about what you do comes through your resume, however, to represent you in a through and professional manner, your recruiter needs to know much more. You should be prepared to clearly and honestly communicate with your recruiter on the following:

  • Current position and exact employment dates
  • Skills
  • Objectives
  • Motivations (reasons for making a change)
  • How does your family feel about your career change and possible relocation
  • Salary (current and expected)
  • Relocation parameters
  • Significant quantifiable accomplishments
  • Specific companies or projects of interest
  • Current status of your search
  • Critical timing factors
  • Special needs (housing, schools, spouse employment, etc.)

As you work with your recruiter, you should develop a sense of trust and confidence. This means having an open dialogue to share both positive and negative feedback. If you are not comfortable with this arrangement, perhaps another recruiter is right for you!

Be sure that you establish some baseline rules for your relationship. For example, you should agree on a timeline and guidelines for communicating with each other.

Your recruiter should not only be able to tell you about career opportunities, but also provide you with very valuable advice on how to interview and what to expect through the process.

Finally, maintain regular communication with your recruiter. If you are actively searching, you should be talking on a regular basis. While interviewing, you may need to talk daily.
